Fibonacci was born around 1170. We do not know the exact date of his birth because birth records were not kept long ago as they are today. If he had been born into a famous family, they would have recorded the event, but he was born into the merchant (business) class.

Fibonacci was born in Pisa, a city in northern Italy.

Back then, Italy was not the united country it is today. It was broken into "city states", areas with their own local government and currency.
Fibonacci's father, Guilielmo Bonacci, was a civil servant working for Pisan merchants in the North African port town of Bugia. Back then, this area was called the Barbary Coast. Today, the town of Bugia is in Algeria and is called Bejaia.
