The sprouts on the asparagus spear are easy to follow. You will likely find 5 spirals clockwise and 3 spirals counterclockwise.

I had to include this illustration by the artist Helen Krayenhoff. She didn't just make beautiful pictures, she got IT right. She saw the pattern, the magic. The buds on the asparagus and the leaves of the artichoke spiral correctly, they aren't simply show in an X pattern.
